Kick off your 2018 in style! There are tons of great events going on in Springfield in January. If your resolution is to get out in the community more, there’s no shortage of really fun things to do in the first month of the new year. 2017 was great and 2018 looks like it’ll be an even bigger and better year for the Queen City!

The classic musical, the Sound of Music is coming to Springfield! The story of the von Trapp family will be told in three performances at Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts in early January. This production has received rave reviews from Variety, The Los Angeles Times and many other publications of record. Come out and see this Tony award winning play in Springfield!

Gillioz theater

The rock harmonies of America swept the nation 47 years ago for the first time and they’ve been performing their classic hits ever since. The group will be holding a performance in the historic Gillioz Theater on January 20th. If you’re not familiar with their work, they’re the band who wrote the song “A Horse With No Name” and “I Need You.”
Missouri St. Bears vs. Northern Iowa Panthers

We don’t know if you know this yet, but the Bears are really good this year! Alize Johnson and company will take on conference rival Northern Iowa at home on January 4th. Come out and support the Bears in their quest to win the Missouri Valley Conference and earn that NCAA tournament bid!
Springfield Symphony Presents: Romantic Revolution

This year, the Springfield Symphony Orchestra is performing collections of music from Russia and the January performance figures to be a memorable one! They’ll be playing the music of Wagner and Brahms from the Romantic Period. Also on hand will be special guest performer Chae Won Hong, an award winning cellist who will Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1!

Bass Pro Tournament of Champions

The 34th annual Bass Pro Tournament of Champions returns to Springfield in January! More than 60 NBA players have played in the tournament and it’s always a close up look at some of the best young basketball talent in the world! The tournament takes place over three days and be sure to stick around on Saturday for the dunk contest! Basketball legends like Alonzo Mourning, John Wall and Lamar Odom have played in tournaments past, come out this year to see the next legend!
The Mystery Hour

The best darn late night show in Springfield returns for another live taping at the Gillioz theater. Host Jeff Houghton interviews celebrities from both the national stage and notable locals during the show and they also put on some hilarious sketches with their ensemble of comedic cast members. f you’ve never been to a taping, you should really give it a shot! It’s a great time and it’s local!

There’s always something going on at the Springfield Improv. They have shows every week with different topics and themes. This event is the in-house comedians delivering “spoilers” about the audiences’ favorites films. It’s a hilarious exercise in poking fun at movies and pop culture all while having a good laugh!
Biz 417’s Think Summit

One of last year’s biggest events is back for it’s second-ever event. Think Summit by BIZ417 Magazine is a community-focused all-day conference that challenges the way we think about our community. Last year, attendees got a chance to hear from Jeff and Michelle Houghton, Bass Pro Shops, Uber and plenty more speakers! We’re looking forward to seeing what they do this year!

The Springfield Contemporary Theater has been putting on great performances since 1995 and this season has some amazing titles in its lineup. Walking Toward America is the story of a family of Latvian refugees during the 1940s that escape Russian forces to emigrate to America. It’s poignant story of one family’s quest to find solace in this great country of ours.

Lovers of fine spirits, pay attention! This is the event for you! 417 Magazine puts on one heck of a show at this event every year and this year will be no different. More than 200 different spirits will be on hand and there will be sweet and savory food pairings to try between tastings. you can learn from the pros how to spot a great scotch or just come and enjoy the company of other fellow spirit afficiados!
The MSU chorale is having a pretty big year. They famously performed at the Presidential Inauguration earlier this year and have been selected to perform at the Missouri Music Educators Association (MMEA) Conference at Tan Tar A in late January. Now, you can hear them yourself at MSU on January 21st!
Springfield’s favorite musical sons are back at the Outland Ballroom for a performance promoting its newest collection of songs called Tape Club. The band has been together for more than 10 years and they’ve compiled a collection that true fans will really love, including some new stuff. They’ll be playing their classics and trying out some new stuff at the Outland on January 13th. It’s a show that indie music fans will not wanna miss!
Mac Lethal
For rap fans, this is a pretty big show in Springfield. Kansas City artist Mac Lethal has been called the fastest rapper in the world. His famous “‘Pancake Rap” video went viral a few years back. In it, he raps and makes pancakes at the same time. He’s created a wide fan base in both rap and comedy. If you’re a fan of hip hop, you’re not going to want to miss this show!
2018 Queen City New Year’s Eve Pub Crawl
Fourteen different locations will be involved in this year’s New Year’s Eve Pub Crawl. Each of them will have hats and party favors for people who do the crawl. It’s a fun way to ring in the new year, but be sure to have a driver ready for the trip home. There are tons of options available including Uber, Lyft, and Safe Drives, and Substitute Drivers. Be safe out there and have a great time!
Hurts Donut Company presents: Donuts & Death

This month they’ll be discussing “The Godsend” by Bernard Taylor. It’s a thriller centered around a couple who takes in an abandoned child who seems to bring tragedy everywhere she goes. It sounds pretty frightening! You’re gonna need a lot of donuts to cope!
